If you make the decision to have an HP party, then you know you are in for a DIY project unless you want to spend a fortune on merchandise.

The following checklist shows what you will need and there is further information and downloadable files on the Pinterest Harry Potter Party board.

1. Invitations

This is how you set the scene for delving into the wizarding world so it needs to create an impression, right down to the handmade envelope with an H wax seal.

Hot glue and a colour printer makes it all possible with some metallic paint for good measure.

2. Decorations

Platform 9 ¾

You need to have an entrance to the world in the form of Platform 9 ¾ which can be made from a drop sheet, some paint and masking tape. It is also a great craft activity to get the kids involved in. There is a printable sign for the 9 ¾ to hand from the front door with the walk through platform wall.

Horcrux Hunt

Clues for the Horcrux Hunt help to lead party goers to the next clue.

This website has an example that directs you to set up each one. There are images you can use on Pinterest to execute the hunt to the letter.

Added Interest

Fun decorations include a wall poster pointing to Free Cloaks of Invisibility (because there is nothing there), and Broomstick parking sign for the collection of goody bags that are shaped into broomsticks.

Check out Pinterest for the complete collection of labels, suggestions and posters.

3. Food

This is the most time consuming but also the most fun aspect of the preparation.

You can let your creative chef run wild or follow the ideas from Pinterest to create all sorts of weird and wonderful concoctions including drinking potions.

This can be housed in The Great Hall at a long feasting table after the horcrux hunt is complete. If you have this under a pergola, ‘floating’ candles can be hung from the rafters with fishing line.

Crafted candles from painted toilet rolls and battery LED candles offer a safe option.

4. Games

Houses

Set up guests into houses to be teams for the games to follow

Wands

Homemade wands from chopsticks and hot glue that are painted create great items for the party and for keepsakes for young wizards to take home.

Potions

Using the bottle labels from Pinterest, print and attach them to your drink of choice, add food colouring to each. Use sprinkles for small jars and your wizards can then create their own potion concoctions.

Prisoners of Azkaban

Using a printable sign, stick it to cardboard and cut out a frame to create you own front page of The Daily Prophet for each guest. These can then be used as thank you images for thank you cards/emails like in the picture at the top.

Horcrux Hunt

This adds to the decoration section in that there are rooms needed for the game.

Clues for the Horcrux Hunt help to lead party goers to the next clue.

This website has an example that directs you to set up a chair in the basement or back room, or "Chamber of Secrets." Put the picture of Voldemort on the chair. Tape clue 7 to the snake (Nagini,) and put her next to Voldemort. There are images you can use on Pinterest to execute the hunt to the letter.

The final clue leads to a sorting hat which can be fashioned or purchased from HP merchandising outlets to be authentic.

5. Cake

Individual serves of HP wizard hat cupcakes were our cake of choice but the options are limitless if you like to add your own touch to this masterpiece.

Imperio!

NB. The Imperius Curse (Imperio) is a tool of the Dark Arts, and is one of the three Unforgivable Curses. ... When cast successfully, the curse places the victim completely under the caster's control, though a person with exceptional strength of will is capable of resisting it.
